Organic vs. Non-Organic Baby Products: What’s The Difference?

Bringing a child into the world is a big and beautiful decision. However, more and more parents worry about the future we are leaving for their children.

The product we buy and the companies we buy them from have a significant impact on the environment. Likewise, being a conscious consumer is an excellent way to start reducing carbon emissions. However, there are so many categories of eco-friendly products that it can be confusing as to where and how to start.

To help future parents and aunties begin an eco-friendly journey, today we discuss the difference between non-organic and organic baby products.

Organic vs. Non-Organic Baby Products: Main Differences

The main differences between non-organic and organic baby products are the production process, shelf life, and waste type.

Production Process

Just like organic baby food, organic products for babies come from natural resources which grow in fields.

To satisfy the massive demand, non-organic pesticides (chemicals) are used on crops. These chemicals also help with weed and pest control. Just like non-organic food can be toxic, baby clothes and toys can be, too. We must remind ourselves that skin is also an organ, and exposure to toxicity can affect human health,  especially when your baby or child is in developing stages. When you opt for organic baby clothes, you will have peace of mind that you are doing the best for your baby’s health.

Non-organic baby products have been linked to the following health issues:

  • Skin issues, such as rashes, dryness, and irritation symptoms.

  • Asthma

  • Nausea

  • Cancer

  • Reproductive system issues

Besides the direct impact toxic products have on your little one’s health, the use of pesticides contaminates natural resources like soil and water. Plus, these chemicals can also affect beneficial insects. As a result, by harming non-target plants and insects, pesticides harm the food chain and eventually human health.

Shelf Life

Another quality that separates organic baby products from non-organic products is shelf life.

Unlike non-organic goods, organic products are not meant to last forever. One of the purposes of these products is to have an organic life cycle. Nevertheless, make no mistake, organic products are not one-use disposable products. In fact, with proper care, organic products can last and preserve their quality for long periods.

Once the shelf life of organic products comes to an end, we can return them to the earth through composting without damaging natural resources.

Waste Types

Non-organic products can last for years and turn into a waste type that pollutes the environment. In contrast, when an organic product reaches the end of its shelf life cycle, it becomes biodegradable waste.

Biodegradable waste is waste material made from plants or animal sources. This type of waste degrades under the exposure of one or several of the following elements:

  • Natural elements, such as microbes, fungi, and viruses. Fun fact: viruses are a part of nature, and most times, they are HARMLESS and BENEFICIAL to their hosts. Unfortunately, if we disrupt the natural environment and hosts, viruses can affect human life — such may be the case of COVID-19. In contrast, if we preserve the environment, viruses can help us reduce the waste of biodegradable human-made products.

  • Atmospheric elements, such as sunlight, temperature, and oxygen

Besides minimizing human waste, biodegradable products benefit the soil and promote ecosystems’ healthy growth. When we compost organic waste, we enhance the birth and sustainability of microorganisms such as bacteria. As a result, these microorganisms break down waste into nutrients for plants.
